I have been posting lots of my activities, mostly biking and hiking and lately thinks like rowing and other physical stuff. My smoking days were not any different than anyone else here but there is one difference in my recovery.  I had a strong six month quit going and was doing fine.   I also suffered from severe heartburn. So much so that I would occasionally end up in the emergency room.

The last time I went was in May of 2002 after overdosing on fried Chinese food.  Boy was I sick.   As usual the technician hooked me up for a blood pressure test.  He looked at the device decide it might be broken, going as far at tapping the thing.   He decided to try my other arm and things worked fine.  Back to the left and the reading was nil.

"Ahem,   I'll be right back"

Next thing I know the doctor and nurse are in the room lickity split.

"Something is not right and we are going to admit you".

I felt fine, now that the acid had subsided and the final diagnosis on that was GURD.  A minor condition that is easily remedied with medication.    The blood pressure however was a different story.   The final result was I had to go for a triple heart bypass.  When it was completed and I was in recovery I asked the surgeon if smoking caused some of that.

"If you never smoked, you would not have to have this surgery" was his response.  Even though I quit, the damage had been done.

The point of this is that smoking caused some serious damage but  it got fixed.  By maintaining my quit I was able to gradually recover and improve my life style.   Look what I am able to do now and it's all from keeping the quit.

If you smoke your going to get sick, it's only a matter of time when and how bad.   Dying would be the easy way out compared to being very sick for five, ten or even more years.    You may think quitting is tough but it's no where near as hard as the alternative will be.

May as well get it over with now.   Then buy a bike or something.

Her is the latest  for those interested

Doesn't this just say it all??? I found out I had cancer during my third attempt at quitting..several people have asked me why I bothered quitting since I am terminal...I always say because I do not want to go out a smoker..and being quit gives me extra time in which they might find a cure!!!thanks for the message..

Ooops I sent this to Reader's Choice before reading the other posts and seeing that it had already been sent.

Really liked your post!  I've been telling my daughter for the last hour how much I was missing my cigarettes.  Reading your post reminded how important it is to keep chugging along.  Thanks for your timing and glad to know you survived such an ordeal!!!!

I don't think I ever knew you had triple bypass! You are such a stud biker i just thought you were healthy now and always. Good story for those on the fence.

Ah, you have my drink ready and waiting, except you forgot to get the dry ginger (cola spoils the flavour).  My favourite drink although I only have a glass once every 6 months or so.  Liquor industry wouldn't make a fortune out of me.

For a man who had a triple bypass you certainly recovered well.  Just shows what exercise and a healthy lifestyle can do for you.  Very impressive.

You made my day.....I remember bike riding ..... when I was 10..!
That's about how far back I have a single memory....Burned out most of my brain cells..... during my addiction...Thanks for posting and giving me a update and new site to try. Your so right...

Today is a good day for I woke and didn't smell roses or hear organ music, which means God has given me another day.
