I appreciate all the happy Mother's Day wishes and I extend the same to everyone at QSJ. I kinda think of Mother's Day as women's day, and so the cat or dog or hamster or rabbit or...(well you get the drift) mommies out there get a mother's day greeting from me, too :)
My mother has been gone since November of 2000, but it could have been yesterday that I watched her among her flowers. I miss her so much. We didn't have the greatest relationship, especially when I was a kid. She really didn't know how to be the kind of mother I needed. But, ever since I can remember, there were gardens no matter where we lived. Giant ferns, huge elephant ears, trailing ivies that climbed trees, bamboo and stalks of sugar cane...and omg at the flowers: roses in every color, hydrangea in pink and that ridiculous violet-blue that smells like balloons, hibiscus, azalea, camillas, gardenia, honeysuckle, magnolia, jasmine...I shake my head today to remember the riot of color everywhere. And those mini-forests I crept about in with shaking elephant ears must have been where I learned to believe in fairies.
Yellow roses were her favorite later in life. She had requested "The Yellow Rose of Texas" be played at her memorial, and we planted a bush at her gravesite. For some weird reason this year, I decide to try my hand with roses. I have never tried to grow a rose in my life. Always thought they were beyond my limited plant knowledge. My herbs grow in spite of my efforts and not because of them.
I think I got the bug when I read somewhere about gardeners cutting their roses and bringing them inside to float in bowls of water to enjoy their scent. So I just HAD to do this myself. Of course I wanted a yellow rose, but come to find out most of them don't have a very strong scent. :( Okay, so I bought a hybrid that does have a bit of scent, and planted it Easter Sunday. I then read that hybrids are more delicate and are susceptible to fungus and this and that. I have worried and watched that bush for weeks. It has sat like a stone with black spots all over the pale leaves in spite of my faithful every 2 week spraying and once a week feeding with proper rose food. It hadn't done a thing since Easter but look forlorn. I despaired :(
Last week I noticed some new leaves, and finally some buds. Hooray! Then Friday, I saw some actual yellow. Amazing! Yesterday it was open enough for me to catch a whiff of scent, and today, well today it is opening in all the glory of a perfect, gorgeous rose. I cannot describe this yellow. It had water droplets on it earlier when I took some pictures, and I just stood there looking at this miracle. On this Mother's Day I have a rose.
Thank you, Momma.

I am tearing up reading this. This is eloquently and beautifully written! You really could be an author, I swear! Thank you for your encouragement and support, Kat. You are what I want to be when I grow up. I'd rather be an ex smoker with the occasional desire to smoke than be a smoker with the constant desire to stop doing it.

I'm sure your mother would be delighted with the rose you have produced.
Kind of reminds me of my mother, she had a real green thumb. Didn't have much of a garden area in her later years but, managed to produce some wonderful plants in pots. Her balcony was like a rainbow of colour.
I can picture that rose and your enjoyment of it.

Thanks, Kat, for sharing...will your rose float in a bowl? I like that you take time to appreciate the every day miracles in life (and share them with us!)
