Are You Diligent?

Diligent.  It is very much a loved term, here in the ROK.  I would say if you could have a crush on a word;  Korea is smitten with diligent and all of its forms.

"Oh, he's very diligent."

"She is a diligent student."

"This is Elder Kim (church), he's a very famous and diligent church member."

I've even been called diligent, but flattery is definitely an art form here; so, I didn't give it too much thought.

What I do know, is that I'm still smoke free.  It's been eight months and I'm still going.  Some days I don't even think about it, but there are times that I can feel hear that evil little voice.  You know the one that says one drag won't hurt.  You can go in to that bar where EVERYONE is smoking.  You'll be okay.

I know I won't.  There are so many pitfalls.  It's too much and I know that.

July is an exciting time for me, I get to go home for a month and see my amazing family.  There will also be my friends.  Most of my friends smoke.  I'm already making rules.  Rule number one is no smoking in the car with me.

This has led me to think about the way in which sometimes we prostrate ourselves to those that remain in the cancer stick haze.

Being a "quitter" means being diligent, even if it means annoying the crap out of your friends/family.  For those of us that are attempting to be smoke-free, we have earned the right to protect our quits.  No matter what.  Friends and family should  be willing to make concessions to help us achieve that goal.   Overcoming an addiction isn't just a one-man fight.  Everyone that loves and cares for us is involved whether they want to admit it or not.

Okay.  I'm stepping off my rant 'n rave box.  I'll leave on a positive note.

Whether you are ten years into your quit or ten days,  there are 60 million Koreans and one American that think you are diligent.

I am 4 days into my pre-quit. 3 more to go.

funny thing about diligence.
My parents used it often. hard work. nose to the grindstone.
it's used in law -- "due diligence"

so I had to look it up.
[I'm a word freak]

"steady, earnest, energetic effort".

diligence is a positive thing!

Thanks for posting.

You sound great at eight months.  Good for you.  I laughed hard at the SK's having a crush on the word.

This gave me a smile, Kate. I also think it is very important and timely for all of us to read. I've already sent one entry to VC today, so I won't be a hogger. But if no one else does, I'm coming back later to do so.

You've certainly hit the nail on the head here about diligence. I think you are very wise to create rules to protect what you have fought so hard for. Shining example here, Kate. Thank you! (and I'm so delighted you get to go home). Blessings :)

Thanks for sharing and congrats on 8 months. The thing that stood out to me most wasn't so much the part about diligence, but about how this is not a one man fight. I have often felt that. I am glad to come to this site so that I don't feel that anymore. and yes I am diligent.

I absolutely love it that Korea has a crush on the word "diligent" & it seems that fact belongs somewhere, like in a poem. Thinking, here....
And yes, we as nonsmokers have our rights & if we act obnoxiously, I say hats off to us. We worked hard for our Quits & no-one should jeopardize the clean air & the "space" we have carved for ourselves. Good luck on your time home! Have a wonderful, smokefree time!

hehe, yes I am sure I will annoy some of my family/friends when I say no smoking in my car, they already didn't smoke in my house (even though I did).

Congrats on your successful quit !

Hi Pykke,

I didn't know you taught ESL.  I'm definitely enjoying my job.  I teach in elementary schools, so I really feel like I'm out and experiencing Korea.

Thankfully, I'm surrounded by a many, many non-smokers.  A true blessing.

Have a great day!

I totally agree that we must all be "diligent" in protecting our quits..Whether we like it or not, nico will be "diligently" hiding in our souls waiting to strike out at any oppourtunity we give it..I agree with Kats that this is for sure VC!!
