I quit smoking 11/30/05 and emptied my car ashtray promptly thereafter. However, one stubborn butt was stuck in the crease of my ashtray and not discovered by me for at least a few months. I left this butt in my tray for the last 6 years. I never cleaned my ashtray and left it as it was when I quit. It was a reminder of times past.

I bought a new car 12/31/11 and my wife now drives "Old Red". I drove that Subaru 253,000 miles and with me driving 100-200 miles per day it was time to "stud" it out to wife. So back on the 1st I cleaned out "Old Red" and had to do something with this "Butt". I finally cleaned the ash tray and the old ciggie butt has sat on my desk the last 2 weeks. My son even thought I started smoking again and wanted to know why it was sitting on my desk.

It now is pinned to my desk and I guess I will keep it as a memento of my quit. I just couldn't get myself to throw it out.

My son and I ran the Disney World Marathon Relay (13.1 miles each) January 8th and my quit is as strong as ever. I love being smokefree and a role model !

so you have a butt...teehee
just kidding
but you know we all have some sort of reminder of our smoking days
for me it is a dolphin charm I wear around my neck
I got it to remind me to breathe before I dive in

glad you are a role model and are free of smoking
you certainly have inspired me over the years

Congratulations on another marathon finish. I bought a carton the day I quit, never smoked any of them and still have them on my desk in plain sight, I call them trophies and keep them to remind me that smoking was a choice I made and quitting was a choice I made.

253 thousand miles that is one awesome vehicle

I keep empty cigarette packets to remind me of the control I let cigarettes have over me.  Unlike Earl, I didn't trust myself to leave any cigarettes around when I first quit.  I'm not running marathons yet but can walk up hills with ease.

Can we call you marathon man?

AWESOME!  I used to keep a pack on my fireplace mantle, but my daughter thought I'd smoke them, so I threw them away after about the first 6 to 12 months.

What an inspiring post!  Always good to see you!

Not doing marathons, but I am breathing much easier.  Off to VC with this one.  Job well done!

Way to go buddy. I know you will never go back like before. There is something different about you this time. Tell the butt everyday where it can go. You keep up the good work and thanks for the card
