Something in Ozzy's journal this morning has got me to thinking: where did we addicts get the idea that life is *supposed* to be smooth and wrinkle-free...and when it is not then there is cause for alarm?

As small children we got frightened from time to time and needed to be reassured and calmed. I suppose it felt really good to be comforted after a scare. As an adult, do I continually spook myself with fears of the unknown so that I can then calm myself with smoking (or eating or drinking or whatever)? Instead of growing up trusting in the Universe and nurturing the view that the world is a safe place and I deserve to be in it, for some reason I look around me and see an obsticle course and danger! danger! Will Robinson.

If we look at the natural world, we see the change and honing going on everywhere. Those that do not adapt, do not survive. Diamonds don't fall out of the sky, they are made under pressure. The huge oak trees I admire so much in my neighborhood come from steady growth and adaption to what is going on around them...each moment of their lives turning eventually into decades upon decades of weathering wind and rain and sun and cold. The childish view that everything needs to be going my way in order to feel safe just doesn't serve me. Do I think I am a fluffbuffin who cannot handle a bit of turbulence? What makes me so sure I cannot do this or that? Pfffffftttttttt time and again I've proven that to be untrue. So let me stop making myself suffer so by wishing for what is not and accepting what is. "All suffering is resistance to what is."

Just like I said in my post this morning....

"I've had struggles, trials and lost quits.

We grow the MOST,  I think.  when we are going through hard times.
But that doesn't mean I'd like rough waters ALL the time either!
I am still an unperfect earthen vessel..
Still being molded and formed.
Calm seas give me the chance to catch my breath!
Shore myself up for the next  stormy blast,  which I know 
WILL come my way.
I forget who it is, but there is someone here at QSJ
that has this on their signature line..
"Serenity is peace within the storm"...
I LOVE that!  I haven't attained it yet, but I will some day!
But until I do, I suppose I will come here and
cry out for help when I need it. Whether the
fear is real or imagined matters not.  To ME it's
real and it's always easier when we share our loads!

Some of our fear really is adaptive responses to something else that scared or hurt us. I think addicts have a tendency to have been very scared or very hurt, and therefore the slighest seems so BIG to us. And though like you said we need to change that. Boy is it hard!

Hi Kat,
Thank you for your kind words you posted in my journal last week.
Its so good to know your still here and doing well.  You have helped me more then you ever know to look at my feelings and why would I want to even smoke over them.  You have helped me to cry and continue to heal. That first year or so was Hell!   Whoo hoo  Glad it kept and keeps getting better!
I sure wouldn't be smoke free today if it where not for you and a few other special friends on here at QSJ

Wow, this got me right where I live.  I don't know how many times I allow myself to think, everything is good right now, guess something terrible is about to happen.  How do I ever manage to enjoy myself with that mentality?  

Thank you for this, I will meditate on it and give some thought to how I can change my thinking.  I am relearning to live without the crutch of cigarettes, and for the first time in a long time, I feel like I can think straight, so maybe I will get somewhere with this!
