About ten years ago, just after my retirement from active duty, from our Beloved Navy,
I started to think about my family alot. My priority was.....that I wanted to spend more time with them. I had lost my dad in '91 to cancer (he was 63 when diagnosed). My son was a young teenager....and I knew so much was at stake....
Little did I realize that within a few short years I would lose my Mom and my brother as well. The cauze for my dad was drinking and smoking (cancer), for my Mom and brother, smoking (cancer).
Life is so short people. Take it from a guy that lived way too much...in such a short time...and I have paid that price my dear friends.
I was following their drum too..doing like they did...I could hear it in the distance, cant you hear it too?...of course you can...just listen... not really far away, just around the next set of trees.....well on my way down the tubes, addicted to becoming just another statistic.....an addict...just lookin for a place for another addiction to happen...a hapless, half breathing old fool, thats what your kids will be callin you in ten years, if ya keep smoking and believin the crap they tell you, like you cant quit, like its an addiction,...like its your fault u got addicted, like they...are innocent and you were the fool...trash..
just trash..
all of it
Trash
Then...for some reason, I started to dream that one day I would follow the sound of a different drum the one we both can hear...you and me...... Stop hangin out in bars, drinkin too much and even quit smoking. I really wanted to change, but change is so, so hard to do. Its often easier said than done....right?
I told my son about five years ago that change would come because the way his father (me) and his grand and great grandfather did it was wrong and this change had to come in now. It had to change, starting with me...I was going to cut the drinking down and quit smoking forever.
Five years later, I dont go to bars or clubs and I dont drink seven months of the year**. It took a long time and the change was....painful...but I did it.. and even tobacco and smoking and nicotine are now divorced from my life, forever.
The reason is simple. Somehow, I was lucky enough to hear a different drum...and I chose to follow it.
The reason so many of you are here is because at some point in your life, you began to hear the sound of a different drum. You even began to hear it as you were in your worst experience of addiction. Yet you heard that drum.
Please choose to follow it.
Peace.
**since this entry...at Easter (April)...I decided to quit drinking...for good.... Pete
All we were, is still...
